Jess Buzzle, Level 1 Tennis Coach

Hi Jess, tell us how you got into tennis:

I got into tennis because my friend Izzy was doing it and it sounded very cool. I would sometimes watch her play tennis and thought how fun it looked, so I wanted to try it for myself! I thought that it would be a little scary, especially playing a sport that isn’t so separated by age group as you find with other sports, but it really wasn’t scary at all.

What activities do you take part in at the tennis club?

I take part in Girls’ Squad currently and I used to be in the Silver Squad. I also play in the box leagues and like to enter some of the tournaments too!

What is your favourite event at the tennis club?

I think my favourite event would have to be the summer socials as it’s so nice to see lots of different people and play into the evening.

What do you like best about Leverstock Green Tennis Club?

I think I like the people best- I’ve made so many new friends from tennis and I’ve been able to meet a whole range of people! It really is true that the people make our club so great.

Do you have a favourite pro tennis player and why?

I have a few- Nick Kyrgios is great to watch, but I’ve also been inspired by Emma Raducanu and Cori Gauff who are two girls only slightly older than me and already making their mark in tennis.

How long have you been a leader / coach?

I have been a leader for just short of 4 years now I think- and a Level 1 tennis coach for almost a year.

What made you decide to qualify as a coach?

My first coach was someone called Georgia who, like me, was a level 1 coach and actually coached me when she was the age I am now. I guess having Georgia and the other young coaches that I had in group sessions as role models really inspired me to do the same, and maybe to be the role model for the next generation of coaches and leaders.

What was the biggest challenge when you took your coaching course?

My biggest challenge was definitely trying to get six balls in a little square in a row- it sounds simple but don’t underestimate it. That was part of the skill evidence I had to provide for qualifying.

What’s the funniest thing you’ve ever heard someone say/do on court?

Well, there has definitely been lots of funny things said and done. There have been many times at tennis camps especially where I’ve been crying with laughter because the kids are just hilarious!
